Dharwar System

Beneath the roar of Jog Falls lies a silent wonder

Many goes to Jog Falls to admire that majestic cascade, but few notice the ancient rocky surface on which the water falls.

Geologically, these rocks belong to the Dharwar System, named after the Dharwad region in Karnataka. They are among the oldest known metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks, forming one of the oldest exposed terrains one can walk on both India and the world.

This rocky terrain dates back to the Precambrian era, estimated to be between 2.5 and 3.6 billion years old.
